Chino Hills man Suspected of Fatally shooting neighbor Identified
Chino Hills Sheriff’s identified the man who they say barricaded himself in a home after fatally shooting his neighbor on Tuesday afternoon. The suspect is identified as Donald McCarthy, 53, of Chino Hills and he was arrested following a four-hour standoff with sheriff’s SWAT members, according to the officers that were at the crime scene. He was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail. Police were called to the 4300 block of Val Verde Avenue on a call of shots fired. They found the victim, who owned property adjacent to McCarthy’s, dead from apparent gunshot wounds to his head and chest. A Los Angeles County firefighter-paramedic lives in the area and was mowing his lawn when he thought he heard three shots. Dave Roberts ran to his house, warned his family to stay inside, grabbed his medical bag, and along with neighbor Roy Duenas, came to the aid of the victim. The man had been shot in the head and chest, possibly at short range, Roberts said. Roberts and Duenas started chest compressions and tried to stop the bleeding, to no success. “There wasn’t much we could do for him. He was already gone,” Roberts said. The suspect is still awaiting trial without any chance of bail.
